Guerrero mask of old man #2009.01.054

This exquisite mask of el viajito or the old man was created by the master carver Martin Catalan Lazado from Zumpango del Rio, Guerrero. He uses a gloss enamel paint to give it a nice shine which brings out the rich facial tones, pink cheeks, pink lips, blue eyes and striking white moustache and beard. This mask is made to be used in the Danza de la Viajita but can also be used in many other dances that include an old light skinned man. It was purchased from the carver in 2009 and is unused and in very good condition. It was a sample mask which people could view and commission one to be made so it was carved a number of years ago. It is made from copal wood. It has a number of very small pin holes caused by insects, but has now been treated and should have no further problems. Size H 10”, W 7”, D 5 1/2 ” Weight 2 lbs
