New Guinea Kanipu Mask #1987.01.004
$750.00
This Kanipu mask from the Papuan Gulf region of Papua New Guinea is unusual because it has a small baby kanipu attached to its side. Kanipu masks are used to enforce a taboo on coconuts intended for celebrations. They can also be worn by young boys during initiation. The heads are of basketry construction using cane overlaid with natural pigments. It has a number of nut shells hanging from its nose to act as a rattle. The grass skirt is dry but still mostly intact. The mask is in very good condition. It was collected in 1987 and probably made in the 1970s. Size H 56" W 24” D 37" Weight 5 lbs. Clients from outside the continental United States please email the gallery for cost of handling and shipping.
