New Guinea Mask, Tambanum, Sepik River #1967.01.001
$900.00
This mask was collected by a missionary in 1967. He said it came from the village of Tambanum on the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. It was made using a basketry technique from split cane and colored with natural pigments. It has shell eyes with a nose tassel made from natural fibers. There is a little separation where the top of the head is attached to the main section and some fraying at the base. This mask is well made and the color is good. When it is used in a ceremony a skirt of long leafs or fibers would hang down to hide the body of the wearer. I consider it in good to very good condition. This mask comes with a wooden stand. H 21” (with stand 27 ½”) W 19 1/2” D 25 ” Weight 6 lbs w/stand. Clients from outside the continental United States please email the gallery for cost of handling and shipping.
