Billum Hook from Brunaui village Sepik River PNG #1984.02.001

A nicely carved wood female polychrome “billum” hook used to hang bags from the rafters to keep things safe from dogs and other animals. The face is painted in a traditional style found in the Sepik with natural pigments, and has twisted plant material adornments. It was carved by Cletus Saum in Brunaui village, Sepik River, Papua New Guinea, and field collected in 1984. There is some pigment flaking on the faced and is missing one shell eye. Otherwise it is in good condition with no cracks. H 40 1/2” W 10” D 2 1/2 ” Weight 6 lbs.
